Configuration

The Configuration tab lets you customize how Hindsight processes and stores memories for your organization.

Permissions Required

The Configuration tab is only visible to Admins and Owners.

How Configuration Inheritance Works

Hindsight uses a three-tier configuration hierarchy:

  1. Global defaults — built-in server defaults that apply to all organizations
  2. Organization overrides — settings you customize here, applied to all banks in your organization
  3. Bank overrides — per-bank settings configured on each bank's Configuration tab, which take priority over organization settings

When you change a setting at the organization level, it becomes the new default for every bank in your organization — unless that bank has its own override for that specific field.

Override Indicators

Each field displays a label showing where its current value comes from:

  • Global default — the field is using the built-in server default; you haven't customized it
  • Org override — you've set a custom value at the organization level

At the bank level, the labels are:

  • Inherited — the field is using the organization value (or global default if the org hasn't overridden it)
  • Bank override — a custom value has been set on this specific bank

Configuration Sections

The configuration page is organized into four sections, each with its own Save changes button:

Retain

Controls how content is processed and stored when memories are created.

SettingDescription
Chunk SizeSize of text chunks for processing (500–8000 characters)
MissionSteers what banks pay attention to during extraction — works alongside any extraction mode
Extraction ModeHow aggressively to extract facts: concise (selective, default), verbose (capture everything), or custom (your own rules)
Custom Extraction PromptReplaces the built-in extraction rules entirely (only shown when Extraction Mode is set to custom)

Entities

Controls entity extraction and lets you define a controlled vocabulary of classification labels.

SettingDescription
Free Form EntitiesWhen enabled, extracts named entities (people, places, concepts) alongside any label groups. Disable to restrict extraction to label groups only.
Label GroupsDefine key:value classification labels (e.g., topic:architecture, sentiment:positive). Banks use these labels to classify extracted entities.

Observations

Controls how individual facts are synthesized into durable, higher-level observations over time.

SettingDescription
Enable ObservationsEnables automatic consolidation of facts into observations
MissionWhat banks should synthesize into durable observations. Replaces the built-in consolidation rules — leave blank to use the server default.

Reflect

Shapes how banks reason and respond when using the reflect operation.

SettingDescription
MissionAgent identity and purpose, used as framing context in reflect
SkepticismHow skeptical vs. trusting when evaluating claims (1–5 scale)
LiteralismHow literally to interpret information (1–5 scale)
EmpathyHow much to weight emotional context (1–5 scale)

Resetting Individual Settings

To reset a single field back to the global default:

  1. Find the field showing an Org override badge
  2. Click the × button on the badge
  3. The field reverts to the global default immediately

Resetting All Configuration

To reset all organization-level overrides at once:

  1. Click ActionsReset Configuration (top-right corner of the page)
  2. Confirm the reset

This removes all organization overrides — every field reverts to the global default. Bank-level overrides are not affected.

Actions Menu

The Actions dropdown in the top-right corner provides administrative actions.

Permissions Required

The Actions menu is only visible to Admins and Owners. Some actions are restricted to Owners only.

ActionRole RequiredDescription
Reset ConfigurationAdmin+Resets all org-level overrides to global defaults
Delete OrganizationOwnerPermanently deletes the organization and all data

Deleting an Organization

Owners Only

Only organization Owners can delete an organization.

Organization deletion is a permanent, irreversible action that removes:

  • All memory banks and their data
  • All stored memories
  • All documents and entities
  • All API keys
  • All team members and pending invitations
  • The organization itself

Deletion Process

  1. Click ActionsDelete Organization
  2. Read the warning carefully
  3. Type your organization name to confirm
  4. Click Delete
This Cannot Be Undone

Once deleted, your organization and all its data are permanently removed. This action cannot be reversed.

Back up any important data before proceeding.

What Happens After Deletion

  • You're redirected to the home page
  • All team members lose access immediately
  • API keys stop working immediately
  • Data is permanently deleted

Best Practices

Configuration Strategy

  • Set organization defaults first — configure the most common settings at the org level so new banks inherit sensible defaults
  • Use bank overrides sparingly — only override at the bank level when a specific bank needs different behavior
  • Document custom prompts — if you use custom extraction or observation prompts, keep a record of what they do and why

Before Deleting an Organization

  1. Notify team members — ensure everyone knows about the planned deletion
  2. Revoke API keys — update any applications using your keys

Organization Naming

  • Use descriptive, professional names
  • Include team or project identifiers if needed
  • Avoid special characters that might cause issues
